What Is TMJ?
TMJ is what we frequently call TMD or temporomandibular dysfunction. The temporomandibular joint is located at the base of your ear and skull and it is what connects the lower mandible to the skull. You may experience discomfort in the region due to a dental misalignment, facial injury or trauma, or chronic stress.
TMJ causes moderate to severe jaw pain and can make it difficult to eat, speak, and open your jaw wide. One of the first symptoms of TMJ is a clicking, popping jaw. Left untreated, TMJ may lead to more significant issues like chronic head pain, and ear and neck pain.
What Are the Effects of Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching?
TMJ is closely linked to nighttime teeth grinding and jaw clenching, also known as bruxism. If the teeth are misaligned and the upper and lower jaws do not fit together properly, the grinding can cause the tooth enamel to become weak or worn down. Bruxism can also make your teeth more vulnerable to breaking, becoming loose and shifting around, or falling out altogether. People who have bruxism may experience tooth sensitivity, receding gums, and visibly worn down teeth.
How Can I Get Relief from TMJ and Bruxism?
During a consultation, Dr. Fowler will examine your bite and look for signs of wear and tear that can indicate bruxism or TMJ, and ask questions related to the discomfort and other symptoms you are experiencing. Based on this information, Dr. Fowler will put together a treatment plan targeting your needs, ranging from orthodontic treatment to a simple mouthguard worn as you sleep.
Whatever treatment is recommended for you, you can feel confident in Dr. Fowler and her team for a solution to your jaw pain. Please request an appointment with your dentist in Park Cities today!
